S. Sulawesi Disburses Rp86 Billion for Scholarships

Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - South Sulawesi provincial government has disbursed Rp86 billion in the past two years for foreign scholarships, Governor Syahrul Yasin Limpo said here on Tuesday.

"The funds have been used by 315 students from South Sulawesi to study overseas for their master and doctorate degrees," the governor said.

Syahrul said the funds were also used for scholarships at home for South Sulawesi provincial government`s target to have 2,000 people with doctorate degrees in the future.

With more people having doctorate degrees in South Sulawesi, the governor expressed hope that they would be able to develop their own province so as to be more advanced.

"The people with good knowledge in South Sulawesi are expected to build new sources of energy to overcome energy crisis," Governor Syahrul said, adding that education sector was one decisive factors to make a region or a country gained a better progress.
