RI FM meets Cambodian counterpart

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa met with his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong in Phnom Penh on Monday to discuss, among other things, Indonesia`s efforts to help resolve Cambodia`s border dispute with Thailand.

The Indonesian foreign ministry in a press statement received here on Monday said the two ministers agreed to take their two countries` bilateral cooperation to a higher level to follow up among others agreements reached during the meeting between the Indonesian president and the Cambodian prime minister on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit on November 2011 in Bali.

"Indonesia and Cambodia among others will focus on cooperation efforts in the fields of food resilience, air transportation and investment in the telecommunication sector," Marty said according to the press statement.

To monitor developments in the cooperation in the sectors the two ministers agreed to revitalize the two countries` Joint Commission this year.

"We have agreed to revitalize the Joint Commission this year after the last meeting in 2006," Marty said.

In the one-day working visit Marty had also discussed with his counterpart about various matters linked to issues of ASEAN under Cambodian chairmanship.

The two also discussed efforts to follow up the results achieved by ASEAN under the Indonesian chairmanship in 2011.

Several issues discussed by them include accession of owners of nuclear weapons in the Southeast Asian nuclear-free regional protocol, South China Sea, positive developments in Myanmar and Korean peninsula.

"Indonesia fully supports efforts being taken by Cambodia as present ASEAN chair," Marty said.

Indonesia has an interest in assuring that all of the results achieved in 2011 and the momentum that exists could be continued, he said.

In the meeting the two also discussed the continuation of Indonesia`s facilitation in the efforts to settle border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand.

Pursuant with the President`s instruction foreign minister Marty Natalegawa has also discussed with the Cambodian foreign minister efforts to improve the framework of reference for the sending of Indonesian observers to the border in line with the decision of the International Court on July 18, 2011.

Marty emphasized the importance of keeping the present momentum when conditions on the border are relatively secure and stable.

"Thank God that conditions on the border between Cambodia and Thailand have now been more stable than last year," Marty said.

Minister Marty plans in the near future to also discuss the same issue with his Thai counterpart aimed at finalizing the planned sending of the Indonesian observers.
