Democrat party′s convention committee to hold public debates

The committee of the ruling Democratic Party′s presidential convention will hold a public debate in 10 major cities starting January 21.

 

"The public debate is aimed at introduíing participants of the party′s presidential convention to the public in major Indonesian cities," secretary of the party′s presidential convention, Suadi Marasabessy, said here on Saturday.

The public debates will be held beginning January 21 after the committee sponsors an even called "Meet The Press" here from January 6 to 9. During the four-day event, the participants of the convention faced journalist scrutiny.

The first two major cities to host the debate on January 21 and 22 will be Medan and Palembang, he said.

Eleven national figures are taking part in the convention. On January 21, six participants will appear in a debate in Medan and five participants in Palembang.  On January 22, the two groups of convention participants will exchange location for the debate.

During the event, the participants will speak about their vision and mission, with moderator in charge in each city., he said.

"The objective of the event is to make the participants of the presidential convention more popular in all cities in Indonesia.  This is important to explain to the public who is the party′s presidential candidate and what his vision and mission is," he said.

He said similar debates will be held in other major Indonesian cities, including Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Balikpapan, Makassar, Menadao, Banda Aceh, Padang, and Jayapura.

"We are still taking into account the possibility of the convention ending in Jakarta," he said.

He added that a second round of voting would be conducted by three pollsters when the public debate is held.

The results of the second and third round of voting will be made public after the legislative election in late April 2014, he said.

"Based on the results of the survey, the party will announce the winner of the convention, " he said.
